In Ireland, when you feel sick you can go to the doctor, sometimes called a G.P. (General Practitioner). The doctor is usually located in a Medical Centre.

It is not always necessary to make an appointment to visit the doctor as most of the surgery hours are open to all patients on a "first come first served" basis.

Many surgeries also have a practice nurse whom you can visit for certain reasons, for example for immunisation injections, maternity care, minor cuts and bruises.

A doctor will treat you for most illnesses and may give you a prescription which you need to bring to the Pharmacy/Chemist to fill.

When a doctor is unable to give you the type of treatment you need you will be sent to the hospital. The Accident and Emergency (commonly referred to as A&E) unit is normally your first point of contact with the hospital. You should receive the care you need here.

In some cases it may be necessary to be admitted into hospital for further treatment.

In a medical emergency you can Dial 999 for help, this call is free of charge.
