Plural Nouns (substantiv, plural)

Most plurals are formed by adding -s to the noun.

toys
chairs
boys

Some nouns become plural by using the following rules:

  • Plurals for nouns ending in S, Z, CH, SH, or X are formed by adding -es

one watch - two watches

one bus - two buses

  • Plurals for nouns ending in Y are formed in two ways:

    If a consonant comes before the final y in the word, drop the y and add -ies.

  • baby - babies

    candy - candies


    If a vowel comes before the final y in the word, just add -s.

    boy - boys

    toy - toys


  • Plurals for nouns ending in O are formed in two ways:

    If a consonant comes before the O, add -es

one hero - many heroes

If a vowel comes before the O, just add -s.

radio - radios
  • Plurals for nouns that end with -f or -fe are formed by adding -ves

knife - knives

half - halves

  • Some nouns are irregular and the plural forms must be memorized:

tooth - teeth

child - children

woman - women

foot - feet
